A person sits down on a bench next to a friend.
“Why does my partner irritate me so much?”
“Because you love them…”
“No, that doesn’t make sense… are you nuts?”
“Think about it: they’re not perfect. They have flaws.”
“Yes, I know that!”
“Rationally, you do. But don’t you forget it once in a while? Think about it: sometimes they’ll be the most amazing person in the world, guess your every need and tend to it, know exactly what to do to make you smile. Sometimes they’ll go through everything with you, big or small, and still be there, and still smile in the end…”
“Yeah… They really do.”
“Still, they’re human: sometimes they’ll fail. Maybe they’ll have a bad day, wake up on the wrong side of the bed. Maybe they won’t smile that day.”
“But that’s not MY fault!”
“No, it isn’t. Don’t you do it too, though?”
“I guess I do…”
The second friend stops for a second, thinks, and looks back at the friend who started the conversation.
“Do you have insecurities?”
“Me? Of course I do, everyone does!”
“Exactly. Everyone does. You see, when your partner does something that irritates you, there’s more of a chance that it’s coming from their insecurities than they’re doing it to deliberately piss you off.”
“So what do I do?”
“Talk. But also listen. Everyone has different problems. Let your partner help you with yours, but don’t underestimate theirs. Just…. talk. Work through your issues together. Support each other. Growth needs patience…”
The first friend gave the second one a smile… got up and started walking away.
“Hey!” – shouted the second friend, giving the first one a wink – “Sometimes a hug helps too.”
And so the first friend walked over to the another bench at the park, a little further away, which was already occupied by someone else, and sat down. He smiled. She smiled.
Relationships are hard work that never ends. They are like a child, that need constant attention and nurturing. And they can go very wrong at times! But one thing is true: when they’re right… they’re SO worth it!
